Mastiffs are usually very small as puppies. One can hardly believe they can grow into large powerful dogs. Nevertheless, Mastiff puppies grow very rapidly increasing their weight tens of times during the first years of their life. English Mastiffs, for instance, can weigh about 145-170 pounds as adult dogs. They are considered the heaviest dogs in the canine world. Other Mastiffs are a little smaller. Yet, when full grown they can weigh about 110-150 pounds.

All the Mastiffs are heavy-boned dogs. They have large heads and move gently. Thus, the Neapolitan Mastiff's gait is often compared to that of a cat. This breed has some characteristics common to all the Mastiff-like dogs. It has a broad muscled back, strong legs, and loose skin. Unlike other Mastiffs, Neapolitan Mastiffs have cropped ears and a docked tail. A profound lower eyelid is also a specific feature, which makes them easily recognizable.

The English Mastiff and the Dogue de Bordeaux have a mask on their face. Although an undershot bite is preferred, a scissors bite is permissible in the English Mastiff. On the contrary, a scissors bite in the Dogue de Bordeaux is a fault. Neapolitan Mastiffs can have a scissors or pincer bite. A slight undershot bite is also allowed.

Mastiffs are short-coated dogs. The coat is generally smooth in texture and should not be too long. Fringes (areas of long hairs, usually on the tail and hind legs) are occasionally seen in English Mastiff puppies. This is probably linked to the English Mastiff history. The breed was crossed with the St. Bernard in the 20th century.

Mastiffs - Puppies - Personality Traits

Mastiffs breeders took care to breed out some undesirable qualities peculiar to their forefathers. Since Mastiffs were used as war dogs and vicious fighters in old days, they were known for their aggressiveness and endurance. Nowadays, when the main function of a Mastiff is a guardian and a companion, devotion to its owner and loyalty to strangers are stressed. According to the standard, Mastiffs should not display sings of aggressiveness. On the other hand, a Mastiff is an inborn bodyguard and appears to be reserved with strangers.

Choosing a Mastiff puppy from a litter is a difficult task. Ask advice from a breeder. He has spent a great deal of time with these dogs and must have noticed some traits distinctive of each puppy. It is strongly recommended to examine all the Mastiff puppies and watch them in their daily activities. Puppies should not be too playful or shy. Mastiffs are dignified quiet dogs even as puppies. It is important to contact a few breeders of Mastiffs who offer pedigree puppies and are likely to be reliable.
